    New Student Orientation August 2017

    NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION WEEK  – Monday, August 28 to Friday, September 1, 2017

    The Richmond International Education’s (RIE) Orientation Day includes student registration, orientation presentations, English Language Learning (ELL) assessment, school-based orientations, course planning, and a full-day welcome excursion.

    Your scheduled student registration, ELL assessment, and orientation presentation appointments will be emailed to you on your Registration, ELL assessment, and Orientation Booking Confirmation Letter as soon as we receive your flight itinerary. 

    Orientation Presentations 

    We will have multiple sessions for elementary (K-Grade 7) and secondary (Grade 8 to 12) school students in English and Mandarin on Monday, August 28th, and Tuesday, August 29th.  We will schedule an orientation session time for you.



    ELL Assessments

    * ELL assessment time is by appointment only.  Please read Page 2 Next Step for booking information. *

    All International Students must complete their ELL assessment and student registration before:

    K – Grade 7       reporting to their elementary school for the first day of school on Tuesday, September 5, 2017.

    Grade 8 – 12     booking an appointment with their school counselors for course planning.


    Secondary School-Based Orientations (Grade 8 -12)

    All secondary school-based orientations will take place on Wednesday, August 30th from 1000 to 1130.

    There is no school-based orientation for elementary school International Students (K-Grade 7).


    Early Arrival (Summer)

    Please email your arrival date to the RISP Office as soon you receive a study permit and finalize your flight itinerary. Please also note that additional homestay and medical insurance and administration fees apply to student arrivals before the August 26th program start date.

    • The RIE and Richmond School District Offices are closed for a national holiday on Monday, July 3rd (Canada Day) and for a provincial holiday (BC Day) on Monday, August 7th.


    Late-Arrival RIE Orientation Presentation

    Date:             Friday, September 1, 2017

    Time:           0815 to 0930 (English)

    Location:    Room 5, Neighbourhood Learning Centre (NLC), Brighouse Elementary School (6800 Azure Road)


    **RIE Welcome Excursion** (Excurision is now full – sorry for the inconvenience) 

    The excursion itinerary and registrar details will be posted soon.

    Date:                        Friday, September 1, 2017

    Departure time:      0930

    Departure point:    Entrance of the Neighbourhood Learning Centre (NLC), Brighouse Elementary School (6800 Azure Road)

    Returning time:      16:30

    Drop-off point:       Entrance of the Neighbourhood Learning Centre (NLC), Brighouse Elementary School (6800 Azure Road)

    Students must register for the Welcome Excursion.

    *Transportation and lunch will be provided.

    **Grade K – 7 students must be accompanied by ONE parent/legal guardian.

    ***A parent/legal guardian or a custodian of a Grade 8-12 student may join the Welcome Excursion if seats are available.


    Tuesday, September 5, 2017, is the first day of school for all students.

    All district schools and offices are closed on Monday, September 4, 2017.

    Before arriving in Richmond, it is highly recommended to download the RIE Student Handbook.

    The 2017 RIE Student Handbook will be posted to the Resources page of this website in early August.


    Medical Insurance and Administration

    Medical insurance coverage starts on Saturday, August 26, 2017. Student arrivals before the program start dated of Saturday, August 26th are subject to additional homestay and medical insurance and administration fees.


    RIE Homestay Program

    RIE arranged homestay families are prepared to welcome students into their homes as early as Thursday, August 26, 2017 at an additional cost of $30 CAD per night until August 31, 2017.  Please contact our RIE Homestay Coordinator (kyork@sd38.bc.ca) if you have any questions.


    Next Step

    Upon receipt of your Study Permit approval from the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), please email your flight itinerary to us so that we can book your ELL assessment time.  ELL assessment times are by appointment only!
